Jake Yamamoto, Sales & Marketing Director for Tsubakimoto Europe B.V., looks at the impact of industrial environments on chain performance.

With the high-cost implications of chain failure, and the impact that a chain can have on the quality of the process its driving, a chain is integral to operational success in most industrial processes. The demands of each application vary according to its environment, so working with a supplier who can help identify the challenges and offer engineered solutions is key to specifying chain that will offer long-life and reduced operating costs.

Abrasive environments

In harsh industrial environments such as metal working, sawmills or cement processing, dust and abrasive particles are unavoidable. Dust infiltrates moving parts that can accelerate wear and reduce a chain's lifespan. Even before that stage, grit and abrasive elements will reduce the efficiency and control of power transmission.

Tsubaki Titan was specially developed to operate in these conditions. The chain's pins have a hard coated, low friction surface for increased wear and corrosion resistance.

Its seamless bushes are perfectly cylindrical, ensuring smooth operation and increasing wear resistance in areas where tight tolerances are crucial. These seamless bushes also include Lube Grooves that hold the oil between the pin and the bush, the point of greatest contact, maintaining lubrication.

Corrosive environments

With a presence of water there's the potential of corrosion that will rapidly deteriorate the chain. Corrosion is particularly prevalent if the area undergoes chemical cleaning or where the water contains high levels of salt such as in marine environments.

Resistance to corrosion requires a chain with adequate coating to repel the effects while maintaining strength. Tsubaki's Neptune chain is designed for use in corrosive environments and includes a two-stage coating including an outer resin that provides high corrosion and chemical resistance.

Heavy impact use

Chain durability and performance is significantly challenged in applications that involve shock loads, or where high power transmission or heavier loads are required. Compact applications, for example where larger double stranded chains cannot be used, also face similar challenges.

Tsubaki's Heavy Duty chain range is designed for increased load capabilities and includes higher tensile strength. As well as providing the performance for these demanding applications, the Heavy-Duty range gives longer life with features such as increased plate thickness and through-hardened pins for greater fatigue strength.

Clean environments and lube-free chains

In clean environments, such as food and beverage or pharmaceutical production, it's essential that the chain does not cause contamination. In these situations, lubrication can't be used for the potential of dispersal. For other applications, lubrication might not be easy or possible because of where the chain is located.

Tsubaki's Lambda lube-free chain ensures long-term use with sintered bushes, impregnated with food-grade lubricant, combined with a special coated pin enhancing internal lubrication.

The right chain saves cost

Matching a chain to its environment not only optimises the performance and efficiency of the chain for long term use, it maximises its lifetime. The danger of treating all applications and environments the same, and of considering the chain as a replaceable commodity, ultimately increases cost.

The right chain for the conditions will not only make the life of an MRO engineer easier, it will save costs in maintenance and most critically, it will reduce the cost of downtime - planned or otherwise.

A wine producer in Germany bottles the wine and uses a series of conveyors to transport the bottles through the production process. At the end of the system, the bottles are buffered and accumulated on a spiral conveyor. The spiral conveyor is driven by a roller chain, however as it's a wet environment the chains rapidly corrode and become subject to high friction. This results in a short wear life.

The chain's position is difficult to reach from a maintenance perspective and also, as a result of the wet environment, relubrication is difficult. With an irregular lubrication regime combined with the corrosive conditions, the conveyor's chain required replacement every two years. Frequent chain replacement increased procurement costs and, because of the chain's difficult to access location, it also increased downtime, reducing the wine producer's productivity.

The wine producer replaced the spiral conveyor's chain with Tsubaki Neptune, designed for use in corrosive environments. The Neptune has significantly outlasted the two-year service life of the previous chain and has already reduced the total cost of ownership. Crucially, the chain's extended service life has minimised downtime with less frequent replacement and servicing, which has also reduced the time and cost of maintenance.

The Tsubaki Neptune's durability is a result of its coating that is applied to provide resistance to corrosion and chemicals. With a two-layer coating including resin covering the links, plates, bushes and pins, the Neptune is tested to withstand 700 hours of salt water spray. The chain is also tested for 2,000 hours' resistance against sodium hypochlorite and sodium hydroxide, which are frequently used as cleaning agents in the food and beverage industry.

Other anti-corrosion type chains such as stainless steel variants have to make concessions in the strength department. However, the Neptune is a carbon steel chain with the same tensile strength and allowable load as Tsubaki's standard, hard-wearing roller chains. The special coating also protects against friction, which speeds-up chain wear, by minimising severe dynamic contact between the roller and sprocket.

The treatment to reduce corrosion can create harmful environmental consequences and for the wine producer, it was crucial to avoid these effects. Tsubaki's Neptune chain is free from harmful hexavalent chromium and other potentially dangerous elements such as arsenic, lead, mercury or cadmium.

Because of the anti-corrosion properties, the Neptune chain is frequently used in applications that are subject to frequent and rigorous alkaline cleaning and wet environments. Typically, this includes applications in the food & beverage industry, waste treatment, packaging and PET bottle sterilisation. The German wine producer is satisfied with their investment in a premium grade component, which is key to the performance and productivity of their manufacturing process.

Tsubaki Pin Gear Drives feature either a wheel or rack of pin structures combined with a gear. The gear itself is designed with a specialist tooth pattern that engages continually with the wheel or rack to provide smooth motion. This is thanks to an approximate involute tooth profile which ensures the gear can move across the pins without slip. Each gear has hardened teeth, enhancing durability in operation. These inherent features provide an exceptional load capacity and large transmission torque, ideal for the needs of heavy machinery.

However, this capability doesn't translate to greatly increased cost, as Pin Gear Drives, especially in larger sizes, provide similar performance to gear sets at a more competitive cost point. The speed ratio can also be increased for a lower cost compared to sprocket and roller chain drives, both of which do not provide such impressive load or torque capacity. Unlike roller chains, Pin Gear Drives do not require tension adjustment, improving uptime and cost-effectiveness.

Another area where Tsubaki Pin Gear Drives excel is the increased design versatility they can provide to machine builders. The optimised engagement of pin and gear means that wheel diameter or rack length can be specified with complete freedom. A segmented, modular design allows for designers to increase the size or complexity of Pin Gear Drives seamlessly. Furthermore, this ensures increased ease of installation, as segments can be fitted with minimal fuss, even for large, complex systems. The same is true of disassembly, which consequently streamlines any maintenance work. By fitting the gear within a wheel or rack, machine builders can also achieve a more compact design. Units are available in steel, stainless steel and surface coated variants, further enhancing versatility.

Versatility of specification ensures suitable applications across multiple sectors. Usage in heavy load transfer carriages, industrial furnaces, environmental sanitation equipment, welding roll overs, railway turntables, revolving door mechanisms, casting lines, rotary kilns, large transporters, solar panel tracking systems, handling robots, pallet changers and pallet pools for machine tools is common. Tsubaki can work directly with an end user or machine builder to provide custom solutions to exactly fit an application.

To provide ease of specification and enhance system reliability, Tsubaki offers a wide range of compatible options. Machine builders can select gear motors, gearboxes, drive chains, sprockets, servo motor reducers, locking devices as well as hose and cable carrier systems.

With a global capability, Tsubaki can dispatch expert engineers to customer facilities to assess equipment and select an optimal Pin Gear Drive solution. On-site support is also available post purchase, providing additional assurance to machine builders and operators. By selecting Tsubaki Pin Gear Drives, end users and machine builders not only gain access to a heavy duty, versatile and cost-effective solution - but also all the support required to ensure continued uptime post installation.

Tsubaki Zip Chain Actuators utilise zip chains with an end fitting bracket, which can be housed within a compact chain case. The zip chains engage quietly outside of the housing, with a specially designed Tsubaki sprocket ensuring smooth power transmission. This design enables installation in any direction, allowing for lifting, horizontal movement and suspension - providing versatility for the needs of a wide array of equipment.

Primary benefits include an inherently compact design compared to traditional linear actuators. The height of the chain housing case can be up to 90% less than the stroke, which eliminates the space efficiency issues suffered by pneumatic and hydraulic cylinders. Furthermore, pipes associated with pneumatic and hydraulic cylinders are replaced by cables. This allows for installation within compact spaces, or, offers the opportunity to reduce the footprint of equipment designs. Combined with an integrated drive structure and the ability to install in any direction, Tsubaki Zip Chain Actuators provide plenty of options for equipment manufacturers looking to downsize systems.

Compactness is matched with excellent reliability and speed. Designed to provide exceptional wear protection and high resistance to chain elongation, Tsubaki Zip Chain Actuators have an expected travelling distance of up to 4,000 km. A top speed of up to 1,000 mm/s far outstrips the capabilities of screw type, pneumatic and hydraulic cylinders. Combined with servo motors, Tsubaki Zip Chain Actuators can carry out multi-point stopping with high precision.

For those looking to reduce their carbon footprint, Tsubaki Zip Chain Actuators also offer an advantage in this regard. Inherently energy efficient to produce and operate when compared to pneumatic and hydraulic cylinders, Zip Chain Actuators have a reduced overall CO2 output. The complicated systems associated with pneumatic and hydraulic cylinders naturally result in increased power losses, while the simplicity of Tsubaki Zip Chain Actuators ensures reduced losses and a high system conversion efficiency. As well as reduced environmental impact, high efficiency also enables energy cost savings.

A beverage manufacturer in the Netherlands approached Tsubaki to provide a highly reliable drive chain to boost its equipment uptime, allowing it to capitalise on customer demand.

Growing beverage demand

The global beverage industry is a story of continuous growth, matching an expanding human population and resulting demand. Trends such as improved living standards, the desire for convenience and changing tastes have spawned technologically advanced production lines and cold chain facilities to deliver beverages to consumers worldwide. In 2018, the global beverage industry was valued at US$1,544.61 billion1, with future predictions estimating further growth in the years to come.

High duty requirements

To meet this demand, beverage manufacturers need to secure the reliability of production lines. A highly efficient production line that can provide high output is essential for meeting customer demand. It is also vital for securing profitability. Mass produced beverages offer low profit margins per unit, so ensuring reliable high output is key for manufacturers looking to maximising return. Furthermore, many beverage manufacturers will have supply contracts to honour with businesses such as supermarkets. These are incredibly lucrative, and failure to fulfil delivery quotas places these agreements at risk. Ensuring the continued reliability of production equipment is therefore incredibly important for the prosperity of a beverage manufacturer.

Washing it down

Combined with these demanding duty requirements, beverage manufacturers must also ensure that hygienic standards are maintained. High pressure chemical washdowns are standard across the sector, which reduce product contamination risks. However, this can adversely affect equipment that is not specialised for these operational conditions. Power transmission components on equipment such as conveyors are particularly at risk: chains for example.

In the case of conveyor chains, repeated high pressure chemical washdowns can cause corrosion on the surface of the chain. This rust can increase chain wear in operation. Ultimately, this wear will mean that the chain fails prematurely. The resulting downtime can cause the entire production line to grind to a halt. While maintenance is carried out, production output is decreased, and consequently, overall profitability. Rust can also present a contamination risk to the product itself. To avoid this outcome, a specialised chain solution is required.

Beating chain corrosion

A beverage manufacturer in the Netherlands was experiencing increased wear on a lube-free chain installed on the drive of a bottle conveyor. The stainless-steel chain of the conveyor itself was subjected to a weekly washdown with an alkaline cleaning substance. With prolonged use, the aforementioned lube-free drive chain had begun to exhibit corrosion that was increasing wear. In an effort to eliminate the problem and reduce maintenance, the manufacturer approached Tsubaki to provide a new chain better suited to requirements.

Tsubaki offers a highly capable range of conveyor chains with multiple specialisations to meet specific application challenges. To provide end users with a highly corrosion resistant option, Tsubaki has a range of Neptune™ chains, which are ideal for bottle conveyor applications.

Neptune™ chains feature a special surface treatment that is designed to resist alkaline cleaning, marine environments, acid-rain and other adverse weather conditions. Link plates, bushings and bearing pins feature two special layers to ensure maximum protection from conditions and operational wear and tear. The chain is also resistant to varying temperatures and excessive moisture.

After inspection of the conveyor, Tsubaki provided the beverage manufacturer with the lube-free RS12B-1 Lambda Neptune™ roller chain. Its inherent resistance to corrosion ensured an instant improvement in reliability. This increased service life extended maintenance intervals, thus promoting uptime and productivity. As a result, the beverage manufacturer could capitalise on growing market demand, securing profitability. The elimination of rust ensured that associated contamination risks were effectively reduced.

Tsubaki provides a wide range of chains in Neptune™ specification, with experts available to visit facilities and specify an exact solution, tailored to maximise reliability. A proven track record delivering hygienic, corrosion resistant conveyor chains to the global food and beverage industry ensures a knowledgeable service. Beverage manufacturers can therefore trust Tsubaki to help improve uptime and keep the drinks coming, meeting global demand.

If you like chips, chances are that you owe your dinner to a potato harvester. Self-propelled or towed behind tractors to automatically harvest potatoes from the soil, these machines are an important tool for ensuring the world's food security. Global demand for potatoes grows with the expanding population, which means potato harvester OEMs need to deliver more reliable and efficient machines to maximise the yield of the potato crop.

To enhance its machinery, one global manufacturer approached Tsubaki to provide their Cam Clutches or freewheels to support a new model potato harvester.

The importance of potato harvesting for the global food supply is undisputed. In 2017, an estimated 388,191,000 tonnes of potatoes were produced globally1. Growers in Asia, the Americas, Africa and Europe support this large output, and are constantly looking to maximise the yield of each crop. Increasing yield translates to increased profitability for farmers, as more produce is sold to feed consumers or livestock.

Maximising yield has led to the development of the modern potato harvester. Initially, potato harvests would be carried out by hand or with the help of animals. Then, potato spinners, an early form of harvester, would be drawn along by livestock or tractors. As technology improved, modern potato harvesters entered the market, with the ability to collect more potatoes from the ground over multiple rows. Modern designs feature sieves for removing clods of earth and separation units. This transition has improved the speed of the harvest while maximising its yield, as less potatoes remain in the ground.

Modern farm machinery offers multiple advantages but must be highly reliable to capitalise on them. Harvests are seasonal, so equipment is required to operate intensively over relatively short periods. A breakdown during harvesting is very costly to a farmer, as not only will maintenance be required, but the time lost gathering produce can adversely affect the yield. Maintenance issues can be exacerbated by the fact that farm machinery can be in storage for long periods between usage. This means a reliability issue may not be identified until it is too late.

The very nature of potato harvesting adds further complexity. Collecting potatoes directly from the soil entails shocks and mechanical stresses that are transmitted through the powertrain, which can cause inferior components to fail. Furthermore, lifting potatoes from the ground requires high torque.

An area where OEM's devote attention is the powertrain of the potato harvester. Ultimately, the goal is to design a highly robust assembly featuring long-life components to maximise reliability. This reduces maintenance costs and provides increased security when it comes to intensive harvesting. With such a powertrain, farmers can maximise their machinery uptime, enhancing yield and profitability.

When it came to upgrading the clutch on a new model potato harvester, an OEM contacted Tsubaki, a leading designer and manufacturer of cam clutches, to provide a solution. The OEM had experienced reliability issues with a previously utilised clutch and wanted to improve this aspect of the design.

Working closely with the OEM engineering department, Tsubaki engineers tested two different clutches in the field to assess performance. Upon completion of the trials, Tsubaki recommended the MDEU35-TK Cam Clutch. Offering a torque capacity up to 460 Nm , it provided the required performance to suit the application. Furthermore, it was highly reliable during the test period, ideal for the needs of farm equipment.

The OEM fitted the MDEU35-TK to the new model potato harvesters, which proved to be highly robust in the field. This ensured that potato farmers could carry out the harvest in most efficient manner, maximising yield. The zero maintenance Cam Clutch also contributed to increased equipment uptime, reducing repair costs. Both of these factors conspired to improve productivity and profitability for the farmers using the new harvester.

Tsubaki is a global provider of power transmission components to leading agricultural OEMs. Supported applications include balers, harvesters and seed drills, with all Tsubaki components specifically designed to tackle the shock loading, dust and intermittent operation that defines farming. Tsubaki engineers can work closely with OEM design and engineering teams to provide a tailored solution for each individual design, as well as structured maintenance support.

Bucket Elevator chains

Chain bucket elevators are used to transport bulk materials vertically. Demanding environments like these often challenge system reliability and require unique, innovative chain solutions. Balancing adequate strength with features that effectively defend against abrasion and corrosion can be achieved to enhance the reliable and predictable nature of an elevator's operation. Tsubaki bucket elevator chain is designed with these qualities in mind:

1. Fatigue Strength: Bucket elevators are fatigue machines that subject a chain to continuous loading and unloading cycles. High-impact, heavy-duty applications of this nature call for materials of superior strength and outstanding toughness, assembled utilizing high interference press fits. Premium grade alloy steels are typically utilized for the chain as they offer the highest level of stability and durability.

2. Wear Resistance: Bulk industrial aggregates like finish cement and limestone are highly abrasive. Over time, the infiltration of aggressive small particles within a chain's bearing area can cause the chain to wear and elongate, which eventually will impact the overall efficiency and reliability of the system, driving up maintenance costs and increasing the chance of an unplanned outage. Specialized heat treatment methods, surface coatings and seals can help protect chain pins and bushes from wear caused by destructive debris.

3. Corrosion Resistance: When elevators must transport caustic materials such as coal, synthetic gypsum or fly ash where aggressive corrosion is likely or present, heat treatable martensitic stainless steels can be utilized for the chain pins and/or bushings. In addition, seals or surface treatments are available to further limit corrosion.

Tsubaki's bucket elevator chains are engineered to resist the abrasive and demanding forces of aggregate elevators. Manufactured with premium, high strength heat-treated steels, Tsubaki's bucket elevator chains carry premier strength ratings and demonstrate superior wear resistance in the harshest environments. Tsubaki has developed bucket elevator chains for use in single strand centrifugal discharge as well as dual strand continuous discharge applications. These are usually manufactured to our BT specification which offers excellent toughness and high wear resistance. For even more demanding applications, Tsubaki has application specific solutions such as our FB, FBXA or WORKHORSE series chains.

Tsubaki FB Series large size conveyor chain has a unique mechanism to prevent chain elongation. It features a solid lubricant that is bonded between pins and bushes, and a special seal between outer and inner link plates, to prevent conveyed material from entering the bearing areas of the chain. At the same time, the mechanism prevents the solid lubricant from escaping. Due to this design, FB Series minimizes wear between pins and bushes for a longer wear life than standard Tsubaki BT series chain. In bucket elevator chains with rollers, Tsubaki's FBXA series has specially treated rollers to further reduce wear on these parts.

Tsubaki WORKHORSE Series Elevator Chains with high interference press fits deliver substantial fatigue resistance and market leading stability. Premium upgrades include stainless and/or plated pins and bushings, as well as various types of joint seals to help protect against abrasive and corrosive contaminants. Tsubaki's patented SJ3™- Sealed Joint Technology and its proprietary Titan®XL - Wear Resistant Surface Treatment are common upgrades for the WORKHORSE Series chains. These upgrades have proven to extend chain life in the most demanding applications.

Reclaimer chains

Tsubaki offers customized Reclaimer Chains with a wide variety of options. These chains are specifically designed and manufactured to meet the unique challenges of your operation. To help battle against abrasive particles that build up between bushes and rollers, Tsubaki is proud to introduce the improved anti-dust capabilities for reclaimer chains with outboard rollers. Also widely utilized are Tsubaki's highly customizable Large Size Conveyor Chains. With a wide variety of base materials, corrosion resistant coatings, attachments and rollers available, Tsubaki is confident we have a chain solution that can meet the unique challenges of your reclaimer.

Reclaimer chains should provide the longest service life to achieve the best overall value. Chain must have large bearing areas, high hardness and deep case depth to provide the best performance. Tsubaki engineers have used these principles while retrofitting many reclaiming conveyors with chain and sprockets, achieving longer service life than OEM chains. For superior value and performance, Tsubaki chain is your best choice. Note that due to their complex requirements, reclaimer chains are manufactured on a made-to-order basis, designed and manufactured to meet the specific unique requirements of each site.

For reclaimer chains with outboard rollers, Tsubaki developed a special labyrinth construction that shuts out debris from infiltrating the outboard rollers and chain wear areas. This special construction solves the problem of debris causing premature wear. In addition, the outboard rollers are sealed for life and require no additional maintenance.

Inclined pan conveyors

Tsubaki's incline pan conveyor chains employ a high rigidity anti-bend back design to ensure excellent reliability when compared to commonly used OEM design chains. Tsubaki also ensures that 2 parallel strands of chain are accurately matched to each other which ensures even load distribution and therefore longer wear life. The matching accuracy achieved by Tsubaki far exceeds industry standards.

General use conveyor chain

Tsubaki is proud to offer its extensive line up of highly customizable Large Size Conveyor Chains. As these conveyor chains are highly customizable, with a variety of materials and heat treatment combinations, corrosion resistant coatings, attachments, and roller types available to match the unique conditions of your cement mill, we at Tsubaki are confident that our Large Size Conveyor Chains can meet any challenges your site has to offer.

Drive chain

Selecting the right drive chain for the job is often overlooked. Harsh conditions where dust / abrasive particles infiltrate moving parts significantly shorten the lifetime of standard chain. Tsubaki's latest innovation, Tsubaki Titan chain, is designed to offer previously unobtainable wear life in harsh applications, such as those found in cement plants. The Tsubaki Titan chain features seamless bushes with lube grooves, special coated pins, nickel plated outer link plates, black oxide inner link plates and ring coining to maximise service life.

Sprockets and traction wheels

Chain and sprockets must perform together as a system to ensure overall chain reliability. Tsubaki's sprockets are manufactured from premium materials and are additionally selectively hardened on the teeth or wearing surfaces. This ensures that overall chain life is maximised. Tsubaki also provides innovative designs to make scheduled replacement of wearing parts easy without the need for dismantling the entire drive shaft.

Backstop clutches

Backstop clutches are used to prevent reverse rotation of drive shafts which may cause damage to machinery and expensive equipment. The inner race can overrun freely in one direction of rotation. Reverse rotation is instantaneously prevented by the automatic engagement of the clutch. Tsubaki has pioneered the non-rollover cam design.

Tsubaki's BS-F Cam Clutch is ideal for inclined conveyor backstop applications. When backstopping under excessive load, the inner race stays stationary thanks to the non-rollover cam. Overrunning conditions are improved too, with the inner race moving much slower while internal greasing continues leading to longer wear life. As such, the BS-F Series is designed for high torques and fitted with enhanced dust sealing and a quick change central torque arm.

In short, Tsubaki's premium quality and robust products deliver the ultimate wear performance in the harsh conditions of the cement industry. The resulting longer intervals between maintenance / replacement work will notably reduce your Total Cost of Ownership.

Created by the company's global research & development team in Japan, Tsubaki Titan Chain combines the best features of the existing premium GT4 Winner chain with new specifications designed to deliver the ultimate in wear performance.

Perhaps the most obvious feature of Tsubaki Titan chain is the use of seamless bushes that incorporate Lube Grooves. The bushes are precision made and perfectly cylindrical, to ensure the smoothest possible operation which in itself will help minimise wear. Enhancing this, the special Lube Grooves ensure oil is retained at the very point of contact - where the chain needs it most. This limits the wear between pin and bush, significantly improving the wear life as a result.

The pins have a special coating that provides an extra hard yet low friction surface, thus helping increase wear life further. As a result of these innovations, maintenance cost and downtime are reduced to a minimum. These factors, plus the reduced frequency of swapping out old chain for new, add up to a significant reduction in the Total Cost of Ownership.

The development team have specified corrosion resistant nickel plated outer link plates for the Tsubaki Titan Chain, which combined with black oxide inner link plates provide an extra layer of protection against corrosion. Tsubaki has also incorporated its unique process of Ring Coining the connecting links, which ensures that the chain can be specified up to its full load capacity.

Tsubaki's new conveyor chain range offers prolonged life in Waste Treatment Facilities

Waste Treatment Facilities are becoming more common as public opinion continues to grow in favour of environmental issues and landfill is seen as unacceptable. The facilities, which incinerate waste before processing the remains, will often rely on conveyors to transport the waste from process to process. Due to the harsh environments encountered, traditional conveyor chains often wear quickly and need replacing in a matter of months. Fortunately Tsubakimoto has developed a range of long lasting conveyor chain which is designed specifically for the industry.

A typical Waste Treatment Facility will require conveyor chain which is capable of surviving in several different environments. The initial chain transporting waste to the incinerator will need to survive regular use and shock loading, while chain further along the process may be required to carry dry ash - which can seep into the chain's internal workings - or molten slag - which requires resistance to high temperatures, acid and alkali. With such extreme conditions its hardly surprising that many chains installed in these facilities are only capable of operating for a matter of months before needing to be replaced; leading to high maintenance costs.

Many within the industry, including some chain manufacturers, believe that such short life spans in such environments are inevitable. They say the only way to keep replacement costs at a minimum is to source low-cost products. However, Tsubaki disagrees. It has developed a range of conveyor chain which is specifically suited to the different operational requirements which are found within the Waste Treatment industry. The new range has been built on Tsubaki's many years of experience in developing long lasting solutions and is able to offer many times the operational life of traditional chain product in some applications.

The waste treatment range includes chain for transporting waste to the incinerator, transporting wet and dry, transporting fly ash (including corrosive ash); and chain for molten slag. Each chain series has been optimised for the needs of the individual process and has been shown to offer significantly extended operational lives when compared to product traditionally used within the application.

Derek Mack, Sales Director for Tsubaki UK, comments: "We understand that many of the processes involved in the Waste Treatment industry present unique challenges, and see it as our job to offer long lasting solutions that offer economical benefits, in terms of reduced maintenance and repair costs, as well as environmental benefits, in terms of reduced replacement requirements.

"The range is available in a variety of sizes and with all the attachments which might be necessary. Our sales team is aware of the requirements within the industry and will be happy to specify chain based on a customer's needs and present them with estimates on the expected life of the chain and Total Cost of Ownership savings when compared with the incumbent product."

A pdf brochure is available which features all of the chain types within the Waste Treatment range along with a description of their key benefits and details of the dimensions and tensile strengths. The Waste Treatment Chain Brochure can be downloaded here or requested with a call to the sales team.

The world of solid and bulk handling represents a demanding industrial environment where plant and machinery must be robust and reliable. Here, Derek Mack, of Tsubaki UK, explains why more engineers than ever before are turning to Electro-Mechanical linear actuators as their first choice of actuation mechanism.

Photo: A Tsubaki Power Cylinder is used to open and close a chute flop gate in an Australian mine.

Bulk solid materials are almost certain to be dirty or dusty - or both. Further, they are fairly likely to be hard or heavy - or both. It's little surprise that these materials are notorious for causing damage to handling machinery through shock loading, impact damage and ingress of dust and other fine particles.
As a result of these prevailing conditions, engineers designing and building bulk-handling machinery always go for an ultra-robust approach, using heavy gauge metals and design details that can cope with years of arduous duty. However, it is inevitable that in any machine design some parts will be more critical than others.

In bulk-handling machinery, the most fragile parts used to be the drive mechanisms that open and close gates, diverters and valves. Machinery designers had to go to great lengths to protect these from impacts and dust ingress.

A standard solution within the industry for delivering linear movement has been hydraulic cylinders - these are able to transmit heavy loads and have relatively few moving parts which make them more reliable. However, they do have several drawbacks which can make them cumbersome to install. The hydraulic cylinders have to be supported with a power pack which consists of pump, motor, oil tank, regulators, filters etc. - all of which are then connected by piping to a control system. This creates additional expense and also requires a frequent regular maintenance schedule to prevent problems such as oil leak contamination particularly where food stuffs are handled.

Fortunately Tsubaki offers an alternative that provides a linear drive mechanism which can withstand the rigours of the bulk-handling environment. It is also easy to specify, easy to fit, requires little maintenance and is so versatile that it can be used in many configurations.

Linear actuators, such as the Power Cylinder range from Tsubakimoto Europe, are sealed, one-piece actuators that combine an electric motor and a ball screw. The motor drives the actuator mechanism via gears, which serve to step down the motor speed to the operating speed and enlarge power. It is also a standard to fit Power Cylinders with a simple overload protection device and with a brake that is automatically applied when the motor stops, thus holding the load safely in a fixed position.

Outwardly, they are designed to be robust and to have a high level of protection against ingress of dust, dirt and other contaminants. They may also include integral wiring, lubrication, end-stops and other elements to create a plug and play unit that can be fitted with a minimum of fuss, yet ensure a long and reliable running life. Furthermore, they are likely to include a means for easy mounting of position sensors so that they can be easily integrated into an existing control system.

The Tsubaki Power Cylinder range is ideal for the rigours of bulk handling with impressive performance across many different sizes. For instance, the available thrust ranges from 0.25kN to 882kN, stroke lengths are offered from 50mm to 2000mm and speeds vary from 8mm/s to 333mm/sec. They can be fitted with different types of motor to suit each application, including induction, stepper and servo motors.
In use, a power cylinder provides forwards and backwards' linear motion up to a defined maximum stroke. This can be refined by fitting the cylinder with position sensors that have the capacity to stop at set-points along the stroke; alternatively an encoder can be used to give the ability to stop at any selected point

Introducing electro-mechanical linear actuators to a design in place of more traditional hydraulic systems can provide a number of benefits. The self contained nature of these powerful components eliminates the potential for oil leaks, improving reliability and reducing maintenance time.

The Tsubaki Power Cylinder range is extremely varied to cope with most industry requirements. To ensure that operation is both reliable and efficient it's important that the correct size is selected, with load and stroke requirements taken into consideration.

When specifying linear actuators, it is important to consider the need of options, such as anti-rotation, potentiometers, encoders and other sensors, bellows to protect against dust and water ingress as well as mounting and fixing options. These decisions can be straightforward, but Tsubaki engineers are always available to carry out site visits or consult during design stages to offer any support that may be required.

Tsubaki Power Cylinders are easy to specify and provide a robust and reliable drive mechanism that is suitable for even the most demanding of bulk handling situations. This compares to the alternative of designing and building a complete hydraulic system that requires careful installation and commissioning, consideration for protecting the relatively delicate hydraulic drive cylinder and provision for addressing potential oil leaks and any subsequent contamination.

Tsubaki is a leading supplier of power transmission components to the industry both through OE and maintenance channels. Here we explain how high quality components can improve overall reliability, efficiency and productivity within the port industry.

For the most part the freight is transported in standardised steel containers, which makes the transitions between different modes of transport more efficient and minimises any delays. It also enables manufacturers of both lifting and transportation equipment to deliver products that are guaranteed to fit perfectly.

Due to the sheer volume of containers that are moved around the world every day, it is essential that all the equipment involved in lifting and moving them delivers long term reliability in order to keep the ports operating efficiently. Ships must be able to dock, swiftly unload their cargo and then reload for their onward journey. This means that ship to shore cranes, gantry cranes, mobile stackers, container spreaders and many more pieces of equipment must all work reliably, 24/7 without any unscheduled downtime.

In order to deliver such a demanding schedule, precision components are required to ensure precise positioning of the containers, and therefore a quicker transit time for the cargo. A key component in this process is the freewheel, which can be designed for overrunning or backstopping, depending on the application.

Tsubaki has a long and distinguished record of designing and manufacturing freewheels under the Cam Clutch brand which provide long lasting service in this arduous environment. Offering purpose built models for precise engagement and excellent reliability, Tsubaki is able to increase the available operating time and reduce maintenance costs.

Environmental considerations

Around the world, governments and legislators view ports and shipping terminals as critical infrastructure assets. Their ability to 'go green' by reducing their carbon footprint and by being more sensitive to environmental considerations, is vital to their future success. This philosophy encourages the reduction of engine emissions, fuel consumption and highlights the importance of eliminating oil leaks from hydraulic cylinders and associated circuits that could contaminate the local environment.
This initiative is supported by Tsubaki with a range of products that are designed to be reliable, efficient and environmentally sensitive. Tsubaki Power Cylinders are electric linear actuators that can be installed and operated with very simple wiring, in place of a hydraulic circuit that has the potential to leak.
Rubber Tyre Gantry (RTG) cranes can be equipped with Power Cylinders for steering, allowing the wheels to be turned up to 90 degrees. At the same time the length of the spreader arm must be matched to the size of the container and this adjustment can also be managed by the Tsubaki actuators. The Power Cylinders can also be used to adjust container tilting or positioning by moving the hoisting rope to alter the skew, trim and list of the container.

Flexible support

Clearly with any lifting or hoisting application, control cables and pipes need to be carefully marshalled and protected in order to maintain the operability of the equipment. This can be very effectively achieved using specifically designed cable and hose management systems that offer precision design with the durable materials required for operation in the port environment.

Kabelschlepp, a member of the Tsubaki Group, manufactures the Roller Supported Chain (RSC) system that delivers long service life and reduced maintenance. By using rollers in the design, the push/pull forces on lengths of 50 meters or more have been reduced by as much as 90% when compared to gliding arrangements. Designed to accommodate high travel speed and acceleration, the RSC system has also been rigorously tested to ensure long term reliability in port side applications.

However, such systems need to be carefully designed for each application to ensure that the cables and hoses are properly secured and protected. In addition, the cables that are installed in the carriers need to be properly specified in order to deliver long term reliability and performance in a constantly moving application. All of this can be achieved by working closely with experienced design engineers that have access to the latest design tools and manufacturing expertise, such as those at Kabelschlepp.

Improved performance

Within many pieces of lifting equipment, leaf chains are often ignored until they either fail or they need unexpected maintenance attention to keep them operational. In many cases OEMs specify a chain that will perform adequately for a period, but long term reliability is not always a priority. In applications where durability and performance in a testing environment such as a port are essential, specifying a premium quality drive chain can deliver long term cost savings.

Tsubaki drive chain uses high quality materials and hi-tech manufacturing techniques which minimise wear at the contact points between the rollers and bushes and reduce elongation significantly when compared to competitor products. These properties reduce replacement frequency and maintenance costs which in turn lead to reduced Total Cost of Ownership (TCO).

Modern commerce and keen competition demands that a port operates in the most cost effective manner, which means transferring cargo efficiently using all the available lifting assets. Any unplanned down time can have a significant effect on both scheduling and operating costs. Both port operators and the manufacturers of the lifting equipment can benefit from improved reliability and reduced operating costs.
Tsubaki is able to supply a range of components that have been tried and tested within port applications and have a proven track record for long lasting reliability. The modern port facility is required to operate within tight margins and must achieve high levels of performance in order to remain profitable. By paying attention to the individual components within the much larger operation, it is possible to build reliability into individual pieces of equipment, which in turn will deliver improvements in overall efficiency.

When a bucket elevator manufacturer was experiencing reliability problems with its backstop clutches, resulting in intensive maintenance and frequent replacement, it turned to Tsubaki for a solution.

Replacing the trapped roller design with a sprag clutch delivered higher torque capacity and longer life.
Bucket elevators provide a simple but effective mechanism of hauling and lifting flowable or semi-flowable bulk materials, including grain, fertiliser, foods, wastes and minerals, often into storage silos.

Designed specifically for use on the low speed shaft of inclined and bucket conveyors, the BSEU backstop cam clutch provides the safest reverse rotation prevention qualities available.

Their versatility means they can be easily tailored for use with challenging products, including fragile or abrasive materials. But in all cases, safety is a prime concern, and the main shaft that drives the belt will always be fitted with a backstop clutch. This enables driving of the bucket in one direction, but ensures there is no backwards slippage in the event of a drive problem.

The inherent weight of the bulk material, combined with their often abrasive nature and the fact that the bucket elevators are often operating outdoors and exposed to the weather, all combine to create a harsh operating environment. The high levels of torque, plus the inherent dust, debris, rain, sleet, snow and temperature extremes all take their toll on the drive train.

For one leading manufacturer of bucket elevators, the backstop clutch in particular was causing reliability problems. High running temperatures were leading to early failure of the product and while safety was never compromised, it was certainly leading to increased maintenance requirements and regular clutch replacements.

Looking for a solution, the company called in Tsubaki's engineers, who analysed the problem and recommended that the trapped roller backstop clutch be replaced by a Tsubaki BSEU sprag style alternative. Designed specifically for use on the low speed shaft of inclined and bucket conveyors, the BSEU backstop cam clutch provides the safest reverse rotation prevention qualities available.

Trapped roller clutches feature an inner race with ramps and individually sprung rollers. The rollers rotate during freewheeling in the drive direction, but in the reverse direction the rollers lock against the outer race and inner race ramps to ensure instantaneous backstopping. The sprag clutch provides an alternative design, where cam shaped sprags separate the inner and outer races. The angle of the sprags allows movement in the forward direction, but provides instant backstopping in the other.

The Tsubaki BSEU features an increased number of sprags, which enables greater torque transmission in relation to the clutch's size and weight when compared with a trapped roller clutch, resulting in extended fatigue life. Further, overheating when the motor is idling is lower, which helps maintain lubrication by means of grease instead of oil and so improves the clutch's wear life and ensures less maintenance.

A further feature of the BSEU is its sealing arrangement. V-ring seals are fitted as standard to offer the highest level of protection against dust. Even higher specification sealing is available for applications where protection is needed from the most extreme environmental conditions, such as fly ash, coal dust, splash water and many others.

Being dimensionally similar to other styles of backstop clutch, the BSEU offered the elevator manufacturer an easy upgrade path over its existing clutch. Fitted to the latest models of bucket elevators, the BSEU clutches are delivering safe operation, higher torque capacity, faster operating speeds, less maintenance and longer life.
